About Us

Contemporary Music CenterAbout Us

Founded in Chantilly, Virginia 1989, Contemporary Music Center was established on the simple principle that everyone deserves the chance to learn a musical instrument. Our vision incorporated what has become known as a “Kids at Hope” philosophy:  all students are capable of success, no exception.  In 1989 there was a need for a fresh approach in showing others how to learn to play music: an approach that both embraced the long-standing traditional method of teaching music but also an approach that incorporated technology, and most of all, the simple understanding of enjoyment while learning.  CMC developed its staff around the single idea that making music should be enjoyable, creative, disciplined, expressive and available to all.

In 2004 CMC expanded its footprint opening its second retail/music education facility in Haymarket, Virginia.  In 2013 CMC continued to expand its vision by including a third viable component:  an intimate Listening Room at the Haymarket location–@4410.  The unique idea and creative room design later won Contemporary Music Center NAMM’s coveted Dealer of the Year Award in 2016.

Also in 2013 CMC’s story won the cover of Music Inc Magazine for its successful “Rock Camp” program.  The article entitled “The King of Rock Camp,” features reflections on how Contemporary Music Center’s approach to music education increased the interest of music students, accelerated their growth, and increased their initial interest in learning to play music.

Ultimately, CMC is not just a retail store that sells products.  We sell the idea that music offers something for everyone.  Students, young and old, take lessons, join classes such as song writing, participate in rock band camps, and perform individually or with their groups in @4410 which is open to the public.  We connect with the local school music directors and support their individual programs by offering @4410 for their events.  Overall, we try to incorporate families, schools, and the entire community in our world of music, and we hope that this universal language of music brings everyone together.
